Polar Pond Discovery

A whole new world of wild discovery has opened up. In my search for the best camera for children & schools to use, I’ve been testing the Olympus Tough TG630 camera. Attracted by its drop-proof characteristics, not only is it tough, it is also waterproof and offers much potential for pond exploration.

Easy to use, with custom settings when using underwater,  my children and I  have tested it in the river, under waterfalls and most extensively in a nearby pond. Though many of the aquatic plants have yet to grow, the huge mass of frogspawn offered plenty of artistic subject matter. Looking up, looking down, half in & half out, it has been wonderful discovering what the submerged world looks like when you are underwater – a fabulous learning experience for us all. We have also discovered that  the water is much colder than you think it will be. Which gave me an idea!

First thing this morning, while the pond was still frozen, my son and I tested the camera’s other credentials – that it works in temperatures down to -10c. OK so it wasn’t actually -10c, but we did have great fun photographing the pond and frogspawn from underneath the ice – rather beautiful and not a view we’ve seen before. Whether the Olympus TG630 is the right one, remains to be seen, but it is certainly going to be well tested through the spring and summer  – starting with more discovery tomorrow at Slimbridge.
